Samsung unveiled a whole bunch of interesting gadgets at its Unpacked event held on Wednesday. The Korean tech giant used the occasion to announce the Galaxy S8 and S8+ flagships, Samsung Connect Home, the Gear VR and a new controller for it, a second-gen Gear 360 camera, and the DeX docking station.
Watching the 1-hour presentation will give you a good idea on what to expect of these new products, but if that's not enough, you'll be glad to know that Samsung also uploaded some extra footage to one of its YouTube channels.
10 short videos were added to the Samsung Newsroom channel, and although they aren't that refined (no narration or music is present, while there's sound in only a few of them), they can give you an expanded look at some of the new stuff that you'll find on the devices that were announced at the event. You can see all of them in the gallery below, and we've added a short commentary to ea ch one to put everything into perspective. Let's dig in!
Samsung "Unpacked" extra footage playlist
1. Galaxy S8 Infinity Display
The first video focuses entirely on the new "Infinity displays". Everything starts off with the Galaxy S7 edge and S8+ being showcased side to side. One can clearly see just how big of a jump Samsung made in terms of design for only one year. Then, a person demonstrates how 16:9 videos can be stretched to fit the wider Galaxy S8 screens, which boast an 18.5:9 aspect ratio. Afterwards, we see a comparison of the smaller S7 and S8, while the Multi Window mode also makes an appearance at the end.
2. Gear 360
Here, we see how the new Gear 360 camera works with the latest Galaxy S handset. Apart from being able to record videos in 4K, this quirky gadget can also live stream footage in 2K to YouTube and Facebook. It's a real shame that this short clip isn't narrated, because this could have made it into a really useful and compact tutorial on how the whole live streaming works. Still, the entire process looks straightforward enough, although we're sure that there's a lot more to the Gear 360. The last 20 seconds are dedicated to showcasing a 360 degree picture and the different view modes that are available within the app.
3. Gear VR
Wohoo, we finally get the privilege of watching a video with sound! Here, the Gear VR and motion controller are put into action. The game that these two guys play looks really fun, but the sight of them wriggling about is even more hilarious. The new controller will probably allow players to do much more in VR games, so it's a good thing that Samsung is also selling it separately.
4. Samsung Connect
I'll be honest - I do not own any smart home appliances. Maybe this is why the capabilities of the new Wi-Fi system, the Samsung Connect, blew my mind. Being able to control so much stuff with a single app from your phone looks very futuristic, not to mention convenient. The combination of a mesh Wi-Fi router and a SmartThings hub seems like a great move from Samsung, and it will be interesting to see if the gadget will become popular among consumers.
5. Samsung DeX
The DeX can be easily considered as the most useful accessory to the Galaxy S8. This puck-shaped docking station takes full advantage of the powerful hardware inside the two new flagships, essentially turning them into a into a desktop PC. In this video, we see the new custom Android-based interface which looks similar to Windows, as well as the "Internet" app and Microsoft Word.
6. Galaxy S8 - Biometric Authentication
Ah, the new biometric authentication of the Galaxy S8. At first glance, it looks like a really quick and easy way to access your phone, but Samsung's grand claims of the system being extremely safe and secure are very overblown. We've received an example of how you can bypass the entire thing by simply holding up a photo of the owner's face against the phone, so Samsung has some serious updating to do before it becomes a viable option.
7. Galaxy S8 - Camera
This video starts off with a quick display of the main camera's color filters and zooming capabilities, and then switches to the new and improved 8 MP front shooter. Samsung has added a lot of Snapchat-esque effects for your selfies, which might be a good thing for some but it personally makes me yawn.
8. Bixby
Yay, Bixby! We already knew that Bixby can listen, but this might be the first time that we've seen the new Samsung AI assistant talk. The tech giant is claiming that Bixby is "context aware", and this video displays some of its advanced capabilities. All of this looks very promising, but we'll have to personally test Bixby out before we reach a verdict.
9. Galaxy S8 UX Design
What can we say, the new UX interface looks really good. The icons are really sleek and minimalistic, so they're bound to end up as an icon pack on Google Play.
10. Galaxy S8 Design (Hardware)
The playlist ends with a video demonstrating the beautiful design of the Galaxy S8 and S8+. A lot has been said and written about the layout of these two devices, so we'll just label this as a little treat for every Samsung fan and leave it at that.
