Leak claims Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 will come with an in-display fingerprint sensor - India Today

Xiaomi revealed last month that it is working on the Mi Mix 2 -- an upgrade to the bezel-less concept smartphone -- Mix Mix that the company announced in October last year.

Now more details have surfaced online that claim Mi Mix 2 will boast a fingerprint sensor placed beneath the display. Goodix, a Chinese fingerprint making firm, unveiled its new in-display fingerprint technology at MWC 2017 so it might not be totally a concep tual thing.

Though, upcoming Apple iPhone 8 is also rumoured to boast an all-screen front sans the Touch ID button, but it is unlikely to have an in-display fingerprint sensor as the technology is said to be still in the making. Galaxy S8 also did away with the home button but leaks have it that Samsung has shifted the fingerprint sensor to the back and rather wants users to use the iris sensor for authentication.

So what the new leaks suggests might be a little far-fetched.

Gizmochina, quoting a Chinese analyst, reveals that Mi Mix 2 would use the in-display fingerprint technology and would be launched sometime in the second half of this year. Apart from that, it is also said to have "a number of innovative features"

If Xiaomi is able to successfully deploy the in-display fingerprint sensor on Mi Mix 2, it would be the first to do so (given the expected launch on the phone is before September). Moreover, while the fingerprint sensor would be shifted to the front, there won't be any need for an iris scanner as well -- resulting in an overall decrease in size of the phone, while keeping its screen size unaltered.

With the second generation Mi Mix, Xiaomi wants to achieve a screen-to-body ratio of 93 per cent, up from 91.3 percent on the first version, which was already a feat for working design. The Galaxy S7 edge has this ratio pegged at 76.1 percent, while the recently launched LG G6 attains a decent 78.37 percent.

Company CEO and founder Lei Jun took to social media website Weibo to confirm that Xioami is, in fact, working with French designer Philippe Stark - once again - on the second-generation Mi Mix.

Designed and jointly developed by Philippe Starck, the Mi Mix boasts of a full ceramic body and a screen-to-body ratio of 91.3 per cent: an almost perfect edge-to-edge to be precise. The phone does not have a forehead, just the bottom. It is mostly flat like a pancake and the display -- a 6.4-inch IPS LCD -- is curved around the corners of the top.
