Automakers gained from their new launches over the previous year, with Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors posting positive volumes in February over sustained demands. While Renault, Nissan and Hyundai continued to strengthen their India shares, Ford posted more exports than domestic volumes in the last month.
The volumes were mostly driven by a positive buyers' sentiment couple of months out of demonetisation, and investments ahead of the feared price rise in the new fiscal.

Maruti Suzuki
Riding on the consistent success of Ciaz, Brezza and Baleno, and initial demand of the Ignis, Maruti Suzuki's volume grew by 10.9% in February.
The impact of demonetisation played even after four months as sales of small cars like Alto and WagonR fell by 6.8% year on year, from 35,495 in February 2016 to 33,079 last month. The cumulative sales of the mini segment till February in April'16-March'17 fiscal dropped by 3.4% over the same period of the previous financial year.
Sales of compacts were mainly driven by Swift, Celerio and the new urban hatch Ignis, clocking 9.4% more year on year. The cumulative growth till February in the segment was at 5.9% in current fiscal over the corresponding period last fiscal. MSI launched the Ignis by mid-January and sold over 4,800 units in the first month.
Maruti Suzuki saw sales of Dzire Tour dropping by 26.9% in February 2017 over February 2016. The Dzire Tour is the economical offering of the carmaker to commercial fleet-owners.
As many as 5886 units of mid-sized sedan Ciaz rolled out of MSI showrooms last month, a 14% jump over the sales last February. The number was 22% higher till February in the present fiscal over the same period a year before.
The sub-four-metre SUV Vitara Brezza continued to drive the sales of the utility vehicle segment, with a massive growth of 110.5%. Others in the segment include the best-selling multipurpose utility vehicle Ertiga, the S-Cross and the Gypsy.
Maruti Suzuki's domestic sales in February 2017 grew at 11.7% over Feb 2016, and exports at 2.2% in the same period.
Hyundai Motor India Ltd
India's no. 2 carmaker Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) sold 52,734 units in February, growing at 6%. Local arm of the Korean auto major, HMIL sold 42,327 units in February 2017 in India, growing at 4% year on year. They exported 10,407 units last month, a 15.5% rise over last February.
Renault India
The fastest growing automaker in the country, Renault India also grew at 26.8% last month, selling 11,198 units as against 8,834 units in February last year. The sales were driven by the new Renault Duster launched last March, as well as the popular hatchback Kwid.
Sales of Kwid have dropped from an average of 9,000 units for months since its launch in October 2015, to as low as 6,924 in January this year.
Ford India
American carmaker Ford has successfully established its export base in India . Keeping with the trends, the local arm, Ford India Ltd had exported more units than its domestic volumes. Ford's domestic wholesales grew to 8,338 vehicles in February, up from 5,483 units last year. As many as 15,688 vehicles were exported last month as over 11,823 units from February last year.
"The industry is seeing some green shoots, recovering from the impact of demonetisation," said Anurag Mehrotra, Ford India executive director of marketing, sales and service, in a statement.
Nissan Motor India
Japanese auto major Nissan Motor Co Ltd, through its local subsidiary, Nissan Motor India Ltd, has steadily grown in India. Combined with its small-car subsidiary Datsun, Nissan India posted 24.85% growth in February, with domestic sales of 4,807 units against 3,850 units sold the same month a year ago.
The jump was attributed to the success of redi-GO launched in June last year.
Arun Malhotra, Nissan Motor India Pvt Ltd MD, said, "Our strong sales performance in February maintains the Nissan Group's position as the second-fastest growing car brand in India so far this fiscal year. Our growth story has been driven by the continued success of Datsun redi-GO."
Tata Motors
With continued strong demand of sales of Tiago and the good response to the crossover Hexa, Tata Motors posted a 12% rise last month. Tata Motors sold 12,272 passenger vehicles domestically in February, while the cumulative growth of the passenger vehicles segment was 17% more than the previous February -- 137,718 this year over 117,560 last year.
Mayank Pareek, president of Tata Motors' passenger vehicle business unit, said: "Tata Motors' passenger vehicle business grew by 12% in February owing to a continued strong demand for the Tata TIAGO. Our recently launched lifestyle UV HEXA, has received an encouraging response and going forward our robust product portfolio will drive growth in the coming months."
The commercial vehicles sales however dropped 1% to 30,407 last month over the same period a year before.
Tata Motors also exported lesser number of vehicles in February (4,894) as compared to the same month last year (5,142). The cumulative number of exports was 13% higher though -- from 51,679 to 58,362.
Mahindra & Mahindra
Mahindra & Mahindra reported a 2.26% decline in its domestic market at 40,414 units last month compared to 41,348 in February 2016. vehicles like Bolero and Scorpio form a large part of the automaker's sales, which are mostly borne from rural India, still recovering from the demonetisation.
"The auto industry is seeing some positive trends emerging over the last two months. With rural sentiment improving, we believe there will be a turnaround in demand over the next few months for small commercial vehicles space," Pravin Shah, the company chief executive (auto division) said.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor
Toyota Kirloskar Motor posted 11.93% growth in domestic sales, selling 11,543 units in February as against 10,312 units in the domestic market last year.
Honda Cars India Ltd
Honda Cars India Ltd (HCIL) launched its updated mid-sized sedan City in February, which drove major sales of the Japanese automaker in India. HCIL posted a 9.44% growth in domestic sales at 14,249 units in February as against 13,020 sold in the same month last year.
Royal Enfield
Royal Enfield, the two-wheeler division of Eicher Motors, reported an 18.88% jump in total sales at 58,439 units in February as against 49,156 in the same month last year.
TVS Motor
TVS Motor recorded a 3.64% decline in total sales in February. The Chennai-based two-wheeler company sold 2,11,470 units last month as against 2,19,467 units in the same month last year.
