10 anticipated LG G6 features
1. All-new non-modular design
Sadly, this probably means that there will no more be a removable battery on board. Oh well.
2. Finally, a water-proof LG flagship!
So far, none LG handsets have employed water-resistance of any kind. The G5's modular body and the V20's removable battery prevented LG from proofing those phones, but no excuses anymore. LG has teased that the G6 will be a water-proof device, or so they say. With Apple and Samsung doing the same with their flagships, LG simply had to up its game in this area if it wants to remain relevant. Fortunately, this seems to be the case.
3. Screen with unorthodox aspect ratio
Probably 19 out of 20 phones you can name come with displays that boast the traditional 16:9 aspect ratio. We've grown so accustomed to this standard, that once a device strays away from that path, news headlines are being made. This is exactly what happened when it was revealed that the G6 might employ a display with an 18:9 (2.00:1) aspect ratio, narrower than what most people are accustomed to. This aspect ratio is known as "Univisium" and is envisioned as a bridge compromise between the different theatrical and television aspect ratios. This will allow for more content to be fitted in the vertical plane of the frame. Aside from that unorthodox aspect ratio, it was also confirmed that the G6's display will boast a resolution of 1440 by 2880 pixels. This will work out a rather sharp display with a pixel density of 564ppi. This will make it great for VR consumption, if certain other criteria are met.
4. Snapdragon 821 inside
We recently heard that LG's next flagship might not come with Qualcomm's latest chipset, the Snapdragon 835, since that one is allegedly going to make an exclusive debut on Samsung's Galaxy S8/S8 Plus later this year. In the meantime, LG will have to resort with the current top-of-the-line Qualcomm chip that is available, the Snapdragon 821. While it's not as beefy as that SD835 chip, rest assured that the SD821 is definitely one of the most capable silicones at the moment, clicking inside such powerhouses like the Google Pixel and the OnePlus 3T. True, employing the newest chipset would have been better from a marketing perspective, but most users will most likely hardly ever notice a stark difference between a Snapdragon 835 and a Snapdragon 821-equipped device.
5. Dual camera at the rear
LG has a neat track record with using dual cameras on its latest high-end devices - the LG V10, then the G5, then the V20 all came with dual-camera setups, either at the front or back. It seems that LG might is fond of that setup as the rumor claims the G6 will also boast two cameras. These will most probably remain at the back of the phone, which was hinted by a couple of leaked CAD schematics; also, the render we mentioned in the first slide of this gallery doesn't seem to show dual front-facing cameras. This was probably a time experiment with the V10.
6. Iris scanner/front-camera combo
From the looks of it, LG might throw in an iris scanner on the G6, similar to what Samsung did with the Note 7 and is also rumored to do with the upcoming Galaxy S8/S8 Plus. There's a twist, though - rumor has it LG is working on an all-in-one module that combines the iris scanner and the front-facing camera together. If true, this will streamline the design a bit. Even if this exact module doesn't make it to the G6, most insiders and leaksters want to convince us that the G6 will definitely employ some sort of iris recognition. We choose to agree at this point.
7. First non-Pixel phone with the Google Assistant built-in
That's correct, the rumor mill claims that the G6 will be the first non-Google device to come with the neat Google Assistant built-in. That's one of the few Pixel-exclusive features that have so far made it no other Android devices officially. We'd take this whole rumor with lots of salt, but given that Google and LG have a rather long history of cooperation, it's easy to find some logic in that hearsay. With everyone betting hard on such smart assistants and phone companions, it's normal to deduce that LG would want to remain contemporary and offer its potential users an alternative to the likes of Siri, the rumored Samsung Bixby, and Cortana, and what's a better way to do that than employ the excellent Google Assistant?
8. 6 or 8GB of RAM?
In terms of native storage, we have no info if the amount of native storage will remain 32 gigs or LG will increase it to 64GB.
9. 3.5mm audio jack, really
This one would have been a no-brainer one year ago, but it's 2017 and nothing's sacred anymore, especially these good ol' 3.5mm audio jacks. So far, most sources agree that there will be a regular 3.5mm audio jack on the G6, so those reluctantly accepting change will have one less problem with LG's forthcoming flagship.
10. The G6 won't overheat, or so they say
After the fiasco with that other phone, quality control is under heavy scrutiny. It's nice to see that LG is betting on safety, as it revealed that the G6 will arrive with a heat pipe inside, the purpose of which is to dissipate any excess temperature and prevent the battery from overheating. Reportedly, it will lower temps between 6 and 10%. The LG G6 won't be the first phone to come with such a cooling component inside - previously, the Samsung Galaxy S7, S7 edge, Note 7, Xperia Z5 Premium, Xperia Z5, the Lumia XL, and other devices have also employed similar heat pipes in order to remain cooler at heavy loads.
